The square, formerly named Lenin Square after Vladimir Lenin, was created in the 1960–70s, after construction of the Government House of Baku was finished in 1952 and monument to Lenin was erected in front of it in 1955. Along with the square, Baku authorities constructed several buildings including "Azerbaijan" and "Absheron" hotels encircling the square, which were later demolished and replaced with Hilton Baku and JW Marriott Absheron Baku Hotel. The Lenin monument was removed in early 1990s.The square was then also renamed in 1991 to Azadliq Square (Freedom Square) after collapse of Soviet Union. In 2006, the government sponsored project oversaw renovation works at the Government House and its vicinity including Government Square. Works lasted until 2010

The Baku City Night Tour lasts approximately three hours and begins at Freedom Square. You’ll first visit Governmental House before going to the White City where is one of the modern world's largest projects and is built on land that has been ecologically reclaimed from a former industrial area. Our next stop will be Heydar Aliyev Center - an internationally recognized architectural marvel, designed by the late Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid. Following the Cultural Center, we will drive through Heydar Aliyev Avenue to reach Baku Olympic Stadium. After getting familiar with the nice examples of contemporary skyscrapers, it is time for enjoying Islamic architecture. We will have a longer break to enjoy the spectacular night view of the largest mosque of Caucasus. After the Mosque we will go on with Flame Towers. Once the sun goes down The Flame Towers light up and alternate between the colours of flickering flames and the Azerbaijani flag. More than 10,000 LED lights on the outside provide a spectacular show. You will have 30 minutes break enjoy the magnificent city view from the Highland Park located on a high hill of the city and is the best place to view Baku's bay as well. Our last destination is going to be Baku Boulevard that offers a romantic and peaceful atmosphere, especially in the night time. Professional guides will give a detailed overview and show you most highlighted points of Baku illuminated at night. After the trip, our minibus/car will take you back to the hotel or certain point in the downtownç based on your request.
